A strong dose of culture for anyone looking to escape L.A.'s oppressive urban sprawl..
In Short
Tony Santa Barbara, proudly located up the coast from the urban jungle of Los Angeles, is not the most obvious place to find world-class art. Still, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, housed in a grand old Spanish-style building, possesses such a large, varied and fantastic collection. Founded in 1941, this privately funded, nonprofit museum has made a point of amassing works in a wide range of media (paintings, sculpture, photography, works on paper), from all over the world (Europe, Asia, the Americas, and even California) and from numerous eras (ancient to modern art).
