I have finally found the best of the best!. My best salon experience EVER in every category! J.R. NIckolai is such a caring, gifted and skillful professional that I am traveling from Washington to receive the best of the best care. Highly recommended and worth every penny!

J.R. is a Master.. J. R. NIckolai is an absolute Master at cutting hair, in the old-fashioned dictionary meaning of the word -- "Artist of superb skill and experience." I think he's world-class.

He has a couple of warm and bright youngsters working with him with above average skills, and the three of them work together seamlessly as a team.

There was one area where my communication skills apparently failed, and he had the problem corrected by the time I walked out the door.

Price was rather high, but I have to say, given his extraordinary eye and skill, not unreasonable. For once I felt it was worth it! Highly recommended.

customer for 26 years. JR is a fabulous hair stylist. My hair is troublesome but JR has always made it look stylish.

Best of all, he knows how to design the cut to fit the shape of my face and my lifestyle.

I have never been disappointed. He makes my hair look great!

My only regret is that I should visit JR more often.

Love his facial products as well.

I have been a customer for 26 years and I keep coming back.

Experience and fashion forward trends. JR Nicholai is an experienced and current hair stylist. He recently corrected a bad mistake in my hair coloring made by someone else. It took 4 different procedures and it turned out great! I liked going to a salon and being attended to by the owner. My hair is long and with only a small trim, he made it look and feel like a completely new style. I watched him cut the hair of a young man who came in with an ordinary hair cut and who left looking very trendy. The salon is clean and peaceful. If you want to be in the care of a guy who knows what he is doing, Beauty by Design is the place to go.

Hair Color and Styling. I wouldn't go anyplace else. JR does color that is natural that leaves the hair soft and manageable. The hair color and cut are lasting and easy to maintain. The products sold are easy to use and keeps the hair in excellent condition.

There is easy parking and appointments are always on time, never a wait. JR keeps up with the current trends and is very profession, upfront and does his best to satisfy. He knows the hair syling business and has been in the same location in Santa Barbara for over twenty seven years.

Well worth a visit.

site unseen. Web Site and salon didn't match. Salon was dirty and hair color was a nightmare! Don't recommend .I could have done the same damage with a box of color, and paid 200 $ less.

Two Years of Consistently Fabulous Hair Styles. I moved to Santa Barbara from the east coast 3 years ago. I couldn't find a hair stylist I liked for the first year, but as a woman in her early 60's, I figured I was the problem and not the stylist. Then I went to Beauty by Design. Wow! J.R. Nickolai literally transformed my appearance, beginning with his impeccable eye for just the right hair style and color (my blonde hair actually looks natural again), and proceeding to a change in makeup and his own line of amazing anti-aging skin products. I look so much younger that people honestly don't believe my age. I had no trouble at all landing a new job. J.R. is an absolute professional who has never once disappointed me in 2 years. I can trust him to just "do something new" when I'm feeling like a change, and he keeps coming up with great new looks. And his customer service is so exceptional that I always feel like I'm his only client. There's never a rush, he's always willing to listen to what I'd like to try, and he advises me with competence and expertise that are obviously genuine. Yes, I pay a little more than I used to for my beauty needs, but the results that I get are priceless. I'm worth it, and so is he.

Best overall salon in Santa Barbara. I have been to dozens of salons and never to one so great as J R Nickolai. The service I received was incredibly personalized and the best I have ever gotten any where. He cut and colored my hair exactly how I wanted it. Some salons do what they want and don't listen to what their client likes. J R Nickolai is nothing like these salons and listens to their clients and is extremely personalized. Greatest service I have gotten at any salon by far!!!
